Somewhere during 1946, '47, '48, Gertrude Blumenthal, of Julian Messner Publications, gave me my first book illustration assignment: Three Spanish Conquistadors, by Shannon Garst.
Consider the impudence of the young artist persuading the editor to change the title from the redundant "Three SPANISH Conquistadors to "Three Conquistadors." This done, I obtained that much more space for my first dust jacket illustration! Despite my audacity, Gertrude continued to give me assignments for the Messner Junior Shelf of Biographies: Ethan Allen, Andrew Jackson, Big Foot Wallace, Jim Bowie, Abe Lincoln, Peter Stuyvesant and Robert E. Lee.
