Another was Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch Governor of New York.
When I got my two complimentary copies of that book I was shocked to discover that my chapter head illustrations were chronologically reversed. That is, the first illustration was placed with the last chapter, the last illustration introduced the first chapter and all between were out of place.
Gert Blumenthal was horrified when I brought the goof to her attention. It was, of course, too late for the first printing, but correction would certainly be made on any subsequent printing run.
Meanwhile, the New York Sunday Times and the Herald Tribune Book Reviews wrote complementary pieces on the text and had very favorable comment for the illustrations, the Tribune printing one of the pictures with its review.
Time passes, editors forget...
That book went through at least six printings without correction and no one, to my knowledge, has picked up or made comment on the mistake, except for myself.
